Somewhere in between the first night of balmy breezes and sandy foot walks, and a tear soaked ceremony on a bluff hovering over turquoise waters, did I realize how lucky I was to be where I am and do what I do. Not only do I get to work in spectacular locations, but I also get to photograph Hawaiian Barbie look-a-like brides like Jamie, who’s wedding debut was truly sensational (and serendipitously, tropical Barbie was always my favorite as a kid). Besides sensational looks from this stunning couple, the intimate ceremony oozed humility, humor and a rawness that was wildly refreshing. These kinds of small, emotion packed celebrations, are my absolute fave.
Jamie was the relaxed half of this lovely duo and we joked that Sascha was the bridezilla. He planned every part of this celebration except for the strapless trumpet dress that fit Jamie as snug as the ring on her finger, and he did it with a tranquility that any planning pro would envy. The flowers were flawless, the bridesmaids appeared to be chosen out of a fashion mag, and the overall style of the day had an air of effortlessness, yet polished and authentic.
Jamie and Sascha’s baby boy, Greyson, was carried down the aisle, snoozing away on grandma’s shoulder as his parents read their hand written vows from scribbled paper through tears and bellowing bouts of laughter. Jamie cried through a story of a reoccurring ladybug visitor in the first days of their love and how she’ll follow his lead in life, while Sascha comically wrote of Jamie’s passion for schedules and their son’s potty milestones. A dynamic groomsman had the acoustic musician “drop a beat” on his ukulele to accompany his spoken word performance about Jamie and Sascha’s relationship, and the maid of honor also led the vow exchange with touching personal stories, good comic timing and benevolent grace. This was one of those weddings where everything just came together without the rigidity of timeline schedules and people fed off the spontaneous flow that led to a perfect day.
High on the bluff above the black rock jump, we all made our way down to sea level of the Kaanapali shores for an intimate dinner reception accompanied by affectionate friends, loving family, fresh local fare, rich wines, heavenly desserts, barefoot walks and a bride and groom plunge in the great rippling Pacific to close the night in style. My greatest congratulations to Jamie and Sascha as they embark on their luminous future with baby Grey in hand!
